Check Your Eligibility / Essential criteria

Before we begin, please read the below essential criteria carefully. To be considered for a placement with AFC, you must confirm that:

  • You hold a Diploma in Counselling (Level 4 or above), or a Degree in Counselling, Child Psychotherapy, Art Therapy, or a related field (e.g. UKCP / BACP accredited).
  • You can provide a Readiness for Client Work letter signed by your tutor.
  • You can commit to half a day per week (afternoon or evening).
  • You are available for induction and onboarding sessions.
  • You can attend fortnightly group supervision on Monday or Tuesday mornings.
  • You will attend 1-to-1 supervision as required.
  • You can make a minimum 9-month commitment to this placement.
  • You understand and currently work within the Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions.

What we expect during placement

During your placement with AFC, you will be expected to:

  • Work collaboratively with parents, carers, and teachers to support consistent therapeutic approaches.
  • Support children, young people, and families experiencing mental health challenges.
  • Identify and explore problematic behaviours while encouraging healthier alternatives.
  • Provide appropriate crisis support and refer to specialist services when needed.
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of individualised support plans.
  • Apply trauma-informed and systemic approaches in your work with clients.
  • Strengthen your skills in trauma awareness and systemic practice.
  • Communicate sensitively and effectively with parents, carers, and professionals.
  • Communicate sensitively and effectively with parents, carers, and professionals.
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date, and confidential client records.
